OH MY! Not something you wake up to everyday! Woke up this morning to find out we have been nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Music Packaging!!! The nomination is for our work on the Chip Taylor release titled Yonkers, NY. Congratulations to all the people who put in many many hours to make this package happen! Super honored and excited to be even be nominated! Above pictures show... the cover/back cover of the package, several interior spreads, and the front and back of the sleeves that hold the CDs 1 and 2.

Print With Heart! Hey All... sorry for the long delay. The bad news is I wasn't able to update for a while... the good news is we have been slammed with tons of great new projects. I am putting on a screen printing workshop sponsored by AIGA Kent on Saturday, November, 6th at Kent State University / Kent OH. The image above is the poster that I created for the event and the very poster we will be printing as part of the workshop. Kind of a double purpose piece... a promo for the event and the keepsake you get for participating in the workshop... Hope ya dig it!

This package is a "Best Of" release containing songs from all of their records as well as 4 new ones. Tons of textures and tons of fun. The images here are of the exterior digipak, interior digipak, interior booklet cover and one interior lyrics page.

The Campfire Tap is ALIVE!

Campfire has teamed up with the fine folks at Mr. Zubs Deli to bring you some extra fine beers from across the globe. The plan of attack will be to find a tasty beer from each state and offer them to you in the order which they entered the union. It works out conveniently as the Dogfish Head Brewery just so happens to be from Delaware, the first state of the union. So head on over to Mr. Zubs and order up a tasty sandwich and nice cold pint of Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA! Yummers!
These are small kegs so get it while supplies last.

Square Records Poster 2010

Hello Tigers! I am super psyched about this beast of a poster that I turned out for Dave and all the fine peoples of Square Records. The poster is a tribute to a great store, a great show and to the year of the Tiger! The poster showcases 3 new challenges of printing for me as well...
- Full bleed Tigerface
- Transparent ink
- 3 color registration

I am super happy with the way this came out. It was cool to convert the studio into a jungle for a few days and conquer the three challenges. Pick one up at the show on August 7th at Musica in Akron OH! Thanks again to Square Records for the super fun project!

This weeks post is a project from Summer/Fall 2009. The overall project was to develop an identity for the new record Alright Dynamite by musician Kendel Carson. The identity was to start with the CD packaging and then to carry on that look and feel over a wide variety of other elements, including; a 14 month calendar (one month for each song), t-shirts, an ep, web site, and posters. Today's post concentrates mostly on the CD Packaging and the web site. The images included are the cover, the back cover, the CD face, and a full spread from the interior of the package.

Overall I wanted to work up a balance of beauty and grit to match the musical style of Alright Dynamite. I designed a logo or mark for each song and then carried the style throughout the calendar and the back of the CD packaging. Kind of an interesting and fun way to treat the track list.

Today's post is from a pitch made last year for the book on "Shrek The Musical".
These three spreads were done in hopes of nailing the book.
The three spreads are...
- Chapter Opener
- Interior Text spread / Character feature
- Map of Shrekland and Character identifying page (hand illustrated map)

Such a fun project to work on and we nailed it! We were really excited to work with the fine folks at Black Dog and Dreamworks on this thing, but unfortunately the project fell victim to the times. Either way, it was cool to develop these samples and fun to show every once and while.

Damn you Shrek... you big green bastard! Ha

After School Special!

This is my kind of after school special! I was asked to design t-shirts for an after school program at the Ashland County Community Academy and they wanted something a bit cooler then the Phys. ED shirts of old with the blank space for handwriting your name! The programs included everything from scrapbooking, to photography, to rock club, to basketball. I wanted to play with the scale and build a fun oversize collage of all these activities in one. I mean seriously where the hell were these opportunities when I was in school. I was too busy listening to Warrant I guess! Ha

Thanks again to Donne and the rest of the fine folks at the ACCA. I love working with you guys and hoped to collaborate on many more fun projects in the future! The black shirt is for the boys and the light aqua is for the girls programs.... each accentuating the main programs for each gender.

Hudson Farmers Market

Hello to everyone of NE Ohio and beyond... We just got done cranking out a really fun project for our good friends at the Hudson Farmers Market. The market features local produce and local goods of all kind. Head up to Hudson, one of the most beautiful towns in all of the Midwest, to pick up some great local products. We had a great time cranking out the posters and also bags that will be on hand at the first week of the market.
The Market starts Saturday, June 26th and runs through October 2nd on the Hudson village green! Enjoy!

We designed and illustrated this two color beast with 266 hand drawn illustrations! The book was completed with the fine folks at Sterling Publishing and will be released September 7, 2010.
Not everyday you get to draw Larry King and "stalker-style" Foam hands in the same day!

Hey all, sorry for the slight delay in postings. We were off in Austin selling some shirts, meetin' some fine folks, and absolutely destroying some tasty foods. Anyway, today's post is a poster we did last year for our close friends at Square Records. It's a poster for their 2009 anniversary show featuring a laundry list of local bands including... Drummer, The Bizarros, Dinomania, and Tiger Fighter.

This was a limited edition, 2-color run of 25. All hand-printed on French Dur-o-Tone.

The Vodka Bible

The Vodka Bible is fresh off the printing press and in our possession! This beast of a book is jam-packed with 576 pages of tasty Vodka recipes and absurdly titled drinks! We were super pumped with the big bold type on the chapter openers mixed with the super clean minimal recipe pages. Pick one up and become a Vodka junkie today!

The cover is printed with a neon green ink and some nice varnishes going on as well... always a nice surprise to see those varnishes pop when you see the printed piece for the first time. Take a look or pick one up at your local bookstore next time your out!

Ride Your Bike FOOL!

In honor of Earth Day we are launching a new poster. The poster is a reminder to get yourself on that bike and enjoy your hair blowing in the wind like Yanni!

The poster will be tagging along with Campfire on our summer craft show tours, so if you would like one we will be bringing a few with us to each city. The posters are printed in small runs of 25 and make a great gift for yourself or a bike junky in your life.

The above pics are done for the individual states... California/New York, Minnesota/Pennsylvania, Oregon/Texas. The poster will also be available in a non-state specific version as well. All posters are printed by hand, by me, on french paper 100lb cover. They are all 25" x 19" and will fit nicely in your poster collection.

Meat and Design!

Above is a sampling of the work we have done for our good friends over at Mr. Zubs. The project started with a basic conversation between Andy and Mario ...
Andy: "What are the sandwiches going to be like"
Mario: "Large, oversized, grilled sandwiches with tons of butter"
Andy: "DONE!"

We started with the big sexy stick of butter logo and built from there. This is such a great project because from the beginning the owners have let us be such a huge part of developing the overall idea and not just the visuals. We helped build the menu, name the sandwiches, as well as crank out the signage, t-shirts and window vinyl decals. We have always wanted to dive into the world of restaurant design ... building out an entire environment for people to enjoy visually.

There is plenty more in the works for Mr. Zubs ... including our very own beer tap! So stay tuned and stop on in for an amazing grilled sandwich. As of right now our favorite is the Uncle Rico!

Hey all... our good friends that brought you Crafty Mart will be putting on another great show in May. The show is called Mini Mart and will take place Saturday May 1st, 2010 from 10AM to 5PM at Musica in Akron, Oh. We are excited to roll out the Campfire shirts for the first of many shows in 2010. We will be bringing a ton of shirts and test prints and fun things like that, so come on out. Also, we will be helping out our friends Cheeks and Chins as she rolls out an amazingly adorable children's clothing line! Super psyched for all hip moms and dads to eat it up!

Had a great time cranking out the identity for the event. Thanks to Juniper and J for having us on board. Postcards should be floating around town as well as mini-posters. See ya May 1st!

The above pic is a promo poster we did for the Thirsty Dog Brewing Company out of Akron Oh. We are super psyched with the quality of their beers and how they keep getting better and better. We would love to work with them someday and so we did a little pro-bono poster for their Thirsty Thursday's event. If you haven't heard ... basically you can show up at the brewery on Thursdays and fill up a growler of super tasty local beer for a great price. Half Gallon Growler for $8.00! SUPER!

This one is for the winter months and features a man known among the locals only as Reginald. We plan a series of 4 ... one for each season. Collect them all! If you would like to purchase one of these beasts let us know. They are all hand-printed and come in an extremely short print run... usually 15-20 total with 10 going to the brewery for display.

hello world... this is the ohioboy art & design studio starting off what hopes to become a new approach to show&tell. For those who don't know us ... we are a small design studio specializing in making things look good. That includes everything from books, to cd packaging, to websites, to t-shirts, to posters, to magazines, to postcards, mailers, calendars, handbags, sketchbooks, storefronts, and just about anything you can think of.

We pride ourselves in making every project a fun project. We enjoy the process as much as the outcome and therefore we would like to share the process with ya!

Show & Tell is a place where we get to do exactly that ... show & tell you the latest. Sometimes, that may be the latest book we designed straight off the presses looking sexy and ready for sale ... and other times it might be the b-sides/outtakes of a 12-round-6-month-insanity-redesign-binge that didn't make the cut. To us its all graphic design and its all fun to look at.

Enjoy... we hope to offer something up at a relatively frequent pace. Hope you dig it!
